Child mortality statistics are staggering. In the world’s
poorest countries, over 30 000
children under the age of five die each day from preventable causes related to
conditions of extreme poverty. Analysts say that often casualties could be
prevented if basic sanitation were available. According to United Nations
statistics, as many as 4 billion people (two thirds of global population) lack
access to safe, clean water. While a severe lack of goods and services hurts
every human, it is most threatening to children and it creates an environment
that is damaging to their development. Every 3.6 seconds one person dies of
starvation. Usually it is a child under the age of 5.
People can’t actively work to fix a problem if they do not know a problem exists. Finding solutions for child poverty requires a society to tackle the social issues that allow child poverty to continue and hopefully eventually bring the world closer to ending child poverty.
